Like “The Hundred Years’ War”, this term does not describe a single military event but a persistent general state of war between the two primary belligerents. The use of the phrase as an overarching category indicates the interrelation of all the wars as components of the rivalry between France and Britain for world power. It was a war between and over the future of each state’s colonial empires. Like the Hundred Years’ War, this term does not describe a single military event but a persistent general state of war between the two primary belligerents. The military rivalry continued with British opposition of the French Revolution and the ensuing wars with first the new French Republic and then the Empire of Napoleon.

They called Britain “Perfidious Albion” (meaning “treacherous Britain”). They compared Britain to Carthage, an ancient city known for trade that eventually fell. They saw France as Rome, a center of ideas and culture that grew strong. After William III, the main reason for fighting between France and Britain changed. It became more about money, trade, and who would control colonies in the Americas and Asia. These were people who wanted to bring back the old royal family (the Stuarts) to the British throne.
The Indian threat, which had been made worse because of the Indian alliances with the French, was significantly reduced, and the Americans in 1763 could feel secure within their borders. From fighting in these wars the Americans gained military experience as well as a sense of strength. Though they were not ready for any sort of union by 1763, they had begun to realize that in serious matters they had more in common with their colonial neighbors than they had previously believed. The two countries remained continual antagonists even as their national identities underwent significant evolution.
Even though they still had cultural differences, the violent conflicts had ended. This led to wars with the new French Republic and then with Napoleon’s Empire. Some historians have included the American Revolution and the wars of the French Revolution that finally ended at Waterloo in 1815 in the period known as the Second Hundred Years War. In any case, all these wars were substantial conflicts that were fought all over the world in some cases.
